Analysis of Smartphone User Mobility Traces for Opportunistic Data Collection

چکیده
Considering that smartphones are tightly-coupled with their users, the interaction between smartphones and wireless sensor networks will play a very important role in pervasive computing for improving our daily life. Instead of using smartphones to access the services provided by various wireless sensor networks, we focus on using smartphones to collect data from sensor nodes opportunistically. In this paper, through analyzing the dataset from Mobile Data Challenge by Nokia, we validated the feasibility of opportunistic data collection and identified several important characteristics of smartphone users’ mobility, such as the strong spatial and temporal localities that should be considered when designing the related protocols and algorithms.

Analysis of smartphone user mobility traces for opportunistic data collection in wireless sensor networks
The increasing ubiquity of smartphones coupled with the mobility of their users will allow the use of smartphones to enhance the operation of wireless sensor networks. In addition to accessing data from a wireless sensor network for personal use, and the generation of data through participatory sensing, we propose the use of smartphones to collect data from sensor nodes opportunistically. For t...

In many emerging wireless sensor network scenarios, the use of a fixed infrastructure of base stations for data collection is either infeasible, or prohibitive in terms of deployment and maintenance costs. Instead, we consider the use of mobile devices (i.e. smartphones) carried by people in their daily life to collect data from sensor nodes opportunistically. As the movement of these mobile no...
متن کاملOpportunistic Networking: Mobility Modeling and Content Distribution
We have witnessed two main trends in recent years that have shaped the current state of communication networks. First, the Internet was designed with the initial idea to provide remote access to resources in the network; today it is overwhelmingly being used for content distribution. In addition, the community of content creators has evolved from a small group of professionals into a global com...
متن کاملMobReduce: Reducing State Complexity of Mobility Traces
User traces are essential for analysis of human behavior and development of opportunistic networking protocols and applications. As user traces are collected with high granularity to apply them in diverse scenarios, they have a high complexity resulting from the large number of user states. We present MobReduce: a methodology for reducing the number of states in user traces. We apply MobReduce ...
متن کاملSystem Design for Opportunistic Networks
The proliferation of mobile devices has significantly changed the way users consume information. As a result, mobile data traffic has been increasing exponentially since 2009. According to current predictions, more than 24 exabytes of mobile traffic will be traversing operators’ networks by 2019, with 72% of this traffic being generated by multimedia. This shift in user behavior requires a thor...
